The little girl in this painting evokes memories of those simple, safe childhood days that were filled with wonder and where a walk out to heathlands or meadows was filled with bugs and butterflies. The final image draws on several old family photographs, including one of myself and some of my son as a toddler staring earnestly at a seed head he had picked! The dress was painted from recall of a favourite of mine as a small girl.
The text is a line from a lesser-known track by The Carpenters that I heard whilst playing Mum’s old CDs found as we cleared their old family home. Nostalgic memories surrounded me and the words kept returning to mind weeks afterwards. The message behind the painting is, of course, a serious one: that we must pause to protect the small things—the little creatures, the young—and consider how we shape their ongoing respect and care for our vibrant, interconnected world.
With the contrasts of the blues, yellows and greens this is a vibrant and cheerful work at odds with the serious text applied. A thoughtful work to lift rooms with neutral décor; would work well in a child’s room.
