Camargue horses are the traditional working horse of this French region; they are hardy and agile and live semi-wild in this marshy, challenging terrain. Not currently considered a conservation risk; I saw footage of them at a time in their richly coloured natural watery environment and at that time I was exploring limiting my colour palette so this pale grey horse set against such colourful backdrops resonated with my interest in reduction and this painting was the result.
