The Red Fox - Vulpes vulpes is Britain’s sole wild dog. They have no natural predators in UK and a stable population despite large numbers being lost every year; killed by vehicles, farmers and gamekeepers.
I used to see more of these magnificent creatures when driving at night, but the rural fox is scarcer where I live. They flourish near humans; adaptable and living in social family groups they are to be celebrated for their tenacity and adaptability. I had one unexpected encounter at a busy hospital site, unnoticed by others a fox slinked quietly through the rough scrub and bushes bordering the footpath and I kept pace for a while. Our eyes briefly met before he nonchalantly turned his back and went further into the undergrowth. A truly beautiful animal. This painting celebrates his proud stance and would sit well in any room of the house.
