The red fox is highly adaptable with a habitat ranging across the countryside, woodland and into our towns and cities. Opportunistic and famously stealthy their diet is varied and consists of small mammals, birds, beetles, worms, fruit and any waste food they can find left by people.
I used to see more of these magnificent creatures when driving at night, but the rural fox is scarcer where I live. They flourish near humans; adaptable and living in social family groups they are to be celebrated for their tenacity and adaptability. I had one unexpected encounter at a busy hospital site, unnoticed by others a fox slinked quietly through the rough scrub and bushes bordering the footpath and I kept pace for a while. Our eyes briefly met before he nonchalantly turned his back and went further into the undergrowth. A truly beautiful animal. This painting celebrates his proud stance and would sit well in any room of the house.
The Red Fox - Vulpes vulpes is Britain’s sole wild dog. They have no natural predators in UK and a stable population despite large numbers being lost every year; killed by vehicles, farmers and gamekeepers.
